A spine board, a stethoscope and a team of mentors helped shape Luisdavid Rodriguez's summer.
The Spring Woods High School (SWH) junior explored sports medicine and nursing through hands-on learning opportunities that gave him practical skills and a clearer vision for his future in health care.
Rodriguez, a member of the school's athletic training program, spent part of his summer at the University of Texas Sports Medicine Camp in Austin, where he gained hands-on experience assessing athletic injuries and learning emergency response techniques.
One of the most memorable lessons was mastering the fundamentals of using a spine board, including the importance of communication, teamwork and leadership during high-pressure situations.
While sports medicine is not his intended career path, the experience strengthened skills he plans to carry into his future as a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner.
"I learned so much about the human body and how to help people in critical situations," Rodriguez said. "Those are skills I'll use no matter what area of nursing I go into."
Rodriguez also attended the annual CompassRN Nursing Camp at the Texas Medical Center, where he learned to take vital signs, perform CPR, follow proper personal protective equipment procedures, safely put on and remove protective equipment, help prevent pressure injuries and observe intraosseous access procedures.
He also received a scholarship to support his educational journey.
The experiences reinforced more than technical knowledge. Rodriguez said they sharpened the communication, responsibility and teamwork skills essential in health care and athletic training.
As he returns to Spring Woods, Rodriguez hopes to improve his athletic taping techniques, earn a leadership role in the athletic training program, compete in the SBISD Student Athletic Training Workshop and become certified in CPR and first aid.
Rodriguez's summer reflects the spirit of SBISD's T-2-4 initiative by connecting classroom learning with real-world experiences that prepare students for college, careers and life.
Through authentic opportunities to explore health care professions, he is building the confidence, skills and sense of purpose that will serve him long after graduation.
