Middle school employability labs help students explore future careers

Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) middle school students are getting a head start on their futures through the district’s new Employability Lab, a hands-on introduction to Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways.

The Employability Lab allows students to explore a wide range of career fields by doing the work themselves. Students are programming robots, testing simulated AI welders, setting up green screens for broadcast production, creating cosmetics, practicing health science skills like splinting a broken bone, and more. Each experience helps students discover new interests while building confidence and real-world skills.

Piloted this year at several SBISD middle schools, the lab has received an overwhelmingly positive response from students and teachers alike.

The lab is part of SBISD’s T-2-4 Vision to prepare Every Child for success after graduation, whether they choose to pursue technical certification, a two-year degree, a four-year degree, or enter the workforce.

As students prepare for high school, families are encouraged to review the Program of Studies together. Eighth-grade students and their parents should discuss course options and connect with their campus counselor to choose a pathway that reflects their goals and strengths.
